JOB DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW:
The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) is seeking a Communications Manager to serve as the organization’s press secretary and digital storytelling contributor. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and External Affairs, this role blends traditional media relations with modern digital strategy—elevating IWPR’s research and leadership in the press while driving fresh, creative engagement across social platforms. 
 
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and strategic communicator with strong media relationships, excellent writing skills, and proven experience creating compelling content for digital audiences. They will pitch IWPR to top-tier reporters, develop sharp press materials, and also manage the organization’s digital presence with innovative social campaigns, eye-catching visuals, and trend-driven storytelling. 

 This is a full-time exempt position located in Washington, DC. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Media Relations
  • Serve as IWPR’s primary media contact and support spokesperson needs.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, bookers, and producers.
  • Pitch IWPR research, campaigns, and experts to top-tier and niche outlets; secure consistent coverage.
  • Draft and edit press releases, briefing memos, statements, op-eds, talking points, and media kits.
  • Monitor the daily news cycle and identify rapid-response opportunities for IWPR.
  • Provide media prep and training for IWPR leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Track and report on media coverage and outcomes; manage media lists and systems.
Digital Storytelling & Engagement
  • Maintain and execute a weekly social media calendar across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Create fresh, engaging content that uses pop culture and current events to expand reach.
  • Design graphics, infographics, and visuals in Canva; edit short-form videos for digital use.
  • Monitor engagement and track analytics to refine content strategy.
  • Collaborate with research and policy teams to translate complex data into compelling digital stories.
  • Brainstorm innovative, out-of-the-box strategies to grow IWPR’s audience and brand recognition online.
Note: The person in this role will be the primary social media manager while another team member is on leave.  

Cross-Team Collaboration
  • Ensure media and digital strategies integrate seamlessly with broader organizational communications.
  • Partner with the Advancement team to amplify fundraising and supporter engagement campaigns.
  • Support events, webinars, and briefings with both media planning and digital promotion.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in media relations, digital communications, or a related area.
  • Strong media pitching skills with an existing network of journalist and producer contacts preferred.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills; able to produce sharp, compelling content under tight deadlines.
  • Proven success managing social media campaigns and growing online engagement.
  • Proficiency with Canva and video editing tools required.
  • Knowledge of social media management platforms such as Sprout Social.
  • Familiarity with media list software (Cision, Meltwater, or similar) preferred.
  • Highly organized, strategic thinker with excellent project management skills.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented, and deeply committed to IWPR’s mission of advancing gender equity.
SALARY
This is a hybrid, full-time exempt position. The salary for the Communications Manager role is $69,768 to $87,210 and will be commensurate with experience.
